Grandma Stories

Grandma StoriesWelcome to Grandma Stories at Grandmastories.today.com. Grandma Stories is my new grandma blog where I will share stories about being a grandma to my grandchildren, and the roles grandparents play in the lives of their children and grandchildren.

I have one grandson and one soon-to-be granddaughter that is due in May 2009. Becoming a grandma came as somewhat of a shock to me, since both grand babies were unplanned pregnancies, but grandchildren are a blessing and I’m going to enjoy every minute of my Grandma status.

Grandparent Names for Grandparents

Choosing a grandparent name or nickname for myself wasn’t too difficult for me. I searched online like other grandma and grandpa’s do, in hopes of finding a unique grandparent nickname for myself, but after reading the various ideas and suggestions for grandparents, I decided to accept the honor of just being called Grandma.

Have you seen some of the ridiculous, so-called “grandparent names” suggested online? Some of the names for grandparents were funny and cute, and I’d even go so far as to say that some were also quite unique. Other grandparent nicknames seemed a bit disrespectful to the grandma and grandpa, like:

  • Big Mama
  • Bucket Head
  • Butter Butt
  • Chicken Nana
  • Grumpy

New Grandma

I can see how someone could search for “nicknames for grandma” or “names for grandmother” and find some of these names as cute or unique. I must admit that I originally had the “don’t call me grandma” attitude, because I’m a relatively young, new grandma, and being called Grandma just didn’t seem to fit my personality at all.

I always pictured grandma’s as the kind of old-fashioned grandma that has gray hair, often up in rollers, baking bread or cookies while wearing an old, handmade apron that should have been thrown out ages ago. I’m more of what you might call a “hip Grandma”, so I’ve ordered myself a couple Photo Aprons with pictures of my grandson on the front, and once my granddaughter is born, I’ll be getting another Photo Apron with pictures of her as well.

I’ve since discovered that my image of what a grandma looks like or does with her time was likely based on television shows I used to watch as a child. My own grandparents had already passed away before I was even born, so I never got to experience the fun of having grandparents around, and I really miss the fact that I never knew either of my grandparents.

My own grandchildren are going to grow up with wonderful memories of me as their Grandma, and great memories of their Grandpa too, as we give each of our grandchildren lots of love and attention for as many years as possible.

Are you Grandma or Grandpa? Is this your first visit to Grandma Stories? Have you had difficulty in choosing a grandparent name or nickname for yourself? How many grandchildren do you have?

I just found out that I will be joining the ranks of “grandma” in about 6 months. I think for gramma name I will be using “Nanny” as that is what my mother used and her mother used and so on. We don’t know the sex yet but this will be my friest grandchild. This is also my first visit to this site, but I will be back and eagerly awaiting your next update!
